What is the best insurance billing software for dietitians?

Duo Practice drafts the claim from your recorded visit. You approve it, and it is filed under your NPI through your own Claim.MD account.

What does Duo Practice cost on a real claim?

Across the claims paid for our two practices, the average paid claim is about $126, so 3.9% comes to about $4.91 a claim. That is an average of our own data and not a promise for your payer mix. You pay nothing on a claim paid $0 or denied. You also pay Claim.MD directly for your account, from $30 a month.

When is another option better?

You like handling claims yourself. Kalix has the lowest list price for unlimited claims, and it keeps dietitian-specific records. You bill very little insurance. Practice Better with Claim.MD Basic costs less than percentage billing and lets you keep the client portal and programs. You share the practice with therapists. SimplePractice is built for that. You need a team calendar or an API. Healthie.

Duo Practice fits a solo or small practice where insurance is most of the revenue and the coding and claim work is the problem. It has no client portal or programs.

What every setup has to cover

Eligibility before the first visit, a note that supports the time, the right CPT (97802 for the first visit, 97803 after) and ICD-10 pairing (Z71.3 with a Z68 code), the claim sent as an 837P, and the ERA posted afterward. Software mostly automates the sending. The other steps are where tools differ. Our insurance billing guide walks through each, and the billing service page shows how Duo handles them.

Questions to ask any vendor

Who owns the clearinghouse account if you leave? Where do the ERAs land? Is anything charged on a denied claim? What is the per-claim fee at 20, 40 and 80 claims a month? Run one real claim, from visit to payment, before you move your clients.

Duo Practice drafts the claim from the visit, you approve it, and you pay 3.9% of what the insurer pays. Try Duo Practice free

Duo Practice, in short

What it is
Duo Practice is a free EHR with insurance billing built in. It drafts the note and the claim from the visit, files the claim under your NPI once you approve it, matches the payment and explains denials.
Who it's for
Independent registered dietitians who bill insurance.
Price
The chart is free. Billing is 3.9% of what the insurer pays on each claim, with no monthly fee, so a claim paid $0 costs $0. You pay Claim.MD directly for your own clearinghouse plan.
How it differs
Practice Better, Healthie and SimplePractice give you claim tools and leave the claim work to you. Duo Practice does that work, and it can run on top of the EHR you already use.

Frequently asked questions

Does a solo dietitian need a clearinghouse?

Yes. Every claim goes through one, even if your EHR hides it. SimplePractice and Kalix include their own. Practice Better, Healthie and Duo Practice connect to your Claim.MD account. Payers send ERAs to one clearinghouse per NPI and Tax ID, so pick before you enroll.

What's the cheapest insurance billing software for dietitians?

By list price, Kalix's $15 managed clearinghouse with unlimited claims, added to a plan from $27, is the lowest monthly figure we found. Cheapest on paper is not cheapest in time: you still code and file each claim yourself.

When should you hire a billing service instead?

Billing services usually charge a percentage of collections. Ask what is included (eligibility, denials, appeals, statements) and who owns your clearinghouse account and data. Compare that with software where you keep control.
