Best EHR with AI notes for a solo registered dietitian

The short answerThere is no single best EHR with AI notes for every solo dietitian. If most of your clients pay cash, Practice Better's AI Charting Assistant is the cheapest way to get a recorded visit turned into a note inside the tool you already use. If insurance is most of your revenue, the note is only half the job: pick the tool that also helps you choose the codes and build the claim. Duo Practice includes AI notes in a free chart and drafts the claim from the same visit, for 3.9% of what the insurer pays. Prices below are as of October 22, 2026.

Disclosure: Duo Practice is one of the options on this page, and we wrote it. Competitor prices come from their own pricing pages, on the date shown. Where a page does not state a figure, the cell says so.

What is the best EHR with AI notes for a solo registered dietitian?

It depends on how your clients pay. If most pay cash, Practice Better's AI add-on is the lowest-cost way to get AI notes inside a full client platform. If insurance is most of your revenue, choose by what happens after the note, because the codes, the units and the claim are where the evening hours go.

Which tool fits which solo practice?

Cash-pay or hybrid coaching practice. Practice Better. The AI Charting Assistant starts at $10 a month for 1,200 minutes, and you keep the client portal and programs it is known for. Stay put if that is your model. Read Practice Better alternatives for insurance billing for more.

Mostly insurance, and you want one all-purpose platform. Healthie or SimplePractice. Both give you an EHR and claim tools. The AI note is an add-on in each, and the coding and claim work stays with you.

Dietitian-specific records at a low list price. Kalix. Notes are templated rather than transcribed today, and its transcription tier is listed as coming soon.

Mostly insurance, and the note is not the bottleneck. Duo Practice. The chart and AI notes are free and the claim is drafted from the recording. It has no client portal, no programs and no group features, so it fits a practice that does not need those.

Where Duo Practice is not the better pick

If you run programs, packages or a client app, Practice Better does that and Duo does not. If you share a practice with therapists, SimplePractice is built for it. If you want an API or a team calendar, Healthie is stronger. Our free EHR comparison lists the free plans and their limits.

What an AI note does and does not do

An AI scribe turns session audio into a structured note. It does not choose between 97802 and 97803, count units from the visit length, pick the right ICD-10 pairing (see Z71.3 and the Z68 BMI codes) or read the denial that comes back. Those steps decide whether the note turns into money. Our longer guides: AI charting for dietitians and the best AI scribes for dietitians.

We recorded the same 37-minute visit in Practice Better with its AI summary and in Duo Practice. Practice Better had the chart and claim ready in 6 minutes 35 seconds, Duo in 1 minute 56. It is one visit, recorded by us, so read it as a demo and not a benchmark.

The same 37-minute visit audio in Duo Practice and in Practice Better, real-time timers, no cuts. One visit, recorded by us.

Before you pick

Ask each vendor for its business associate agreement before you record a real visit. Then run one real claim through the tool, from recording to payment, and not only the note demo. If you bill insurance, start with the dietitian insurance billing guide so you know which steps you are handing off.

Duo Practice drafts the chart and the claim from the same visit. The chart is free; billing is 3.9% of what the insurer pays. Try Duo Practice free

Duo Practice, in short

What it is

Who it's for
Independent registered dietitians who bill insurance.
Price
The chart is free. Billing is 3.9% of what the insurer pays on each claim, with no monthly fee, so a claim paid $0 costs $0. You pay Claim.MD directly for your own clearinghouse plan.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best EHR with AI notes for a solo dietitian?

For cash-pay and coaching practices, Practice Better with its AI Charting Assistant is the cheapest well-known option. For insurance-heavy practices, look at what the tool does after the note. Healthie and SimplePractice leave the coding and the claim to you, and Duo Practice drafts the claim from the same visit.

Is an AI note enough to bill insurance?

No. The note supports the claim, but the claim also needs CPT and ICD-10 codes, units from the session time, and a clearinghouse. A note tool that stops at the note leaves those steps with you.

Do I need a business associate agreement for an AI scribe?

If the tool handles patient audio or text, yes. Ask each vendor for its BAA before you record a real visit, and do not paste visit details into a consumer chatbot account.
