Freed vs Duo Practice: which AI scribe fits a dietitian?
Disclosure: we make Duo Practice. Freed's prices and features come from its own pages, checked October 26, 2026. If Freed has added a feature since, its page wins over ours. Where Freed is the better choice, we say so.
Freed or Duo Practice?
They answer different questions. Freed answers "who writes my note?" for clinicians in many specialties. Duo Practice answers "who writes my note and builds the insurance claim from it?" for registered dietitians. If you bill insurance for medical nutrition therapy, the claim is where Duo does the extra work.

Where Freed is better
- Many specialties, one scribe. Freed offers specialty templates and an instant template builder. A group with several disciplines can use one tool. Duo writes MNT notes for dietitians only.
- Your EHR stays the record. Premier pushes notes into any browser-based EHR with one click. Duo keeps the note in Duo.
- More than the note. Freed lists clinical evidence answers from medical sources, visit prep summaries, and patient instructions, letters and referrals, and it sells a separate Front Desk product with plans listed from $149 a month.
- A flat, predictable price. Freed's price doesn't grow with your collections. Duo's 3.9% does: across our two practices a paid claim has brought in about $126 on average (333 paid claims since May 2026), so it is about $4.91 a claim, so at high insurance volume a flat-price scribe plus doing the claims yourself costs less, if you don't mind the claim work.
- No insurance needed. If your clients pay cash, you don't need a claim at all, and Freed's Starter plan is a low-cost way to get notes written.
Where Duo Practice does more
- The claim comes with the note. From the note, Duo drafts the claim with 97802 or 97803, the units from how long the session ran, ICD-10 codes and pointers, modifier and place of service.
- Payer checks before you submit. Duo warns when a claim breaks a payer rule it knows, such as Medicare's referral requirement, and shows the rule's source.
- Filing, with your approval. You approve, and the claim goes out under your NPI through your own Claim.MD account.
- After the claim. Duo reads statuses and ERAs from your Claim.MD account, matches each payment to its claim and explains denials.
What Duo doesn't do: prior authorizations, appeals, credentialing, programs or a client app, and it needs your own Claim.MD account, which Claim.MD bills you for directly (Claim.MD pricing).
What a coding suggestion leaves to you
A code suggestion helps, and you still have the claim to build. For medical nutrition therapy you also need the units from the minutes in the note, the diagnoses in the order the payer wants, the telehealth place of service and modifier, your NPI, the referring physician on Medicare, the payer ID and a clearinghouse to send it. AI scribe for medical nutrition therapy walks through what the note needs so the claim holds up.
To see the Duo side end to end, watch the recording-to-claim demo: one 37-minute visit, chart and claim draft ready to review in 1 minute 56 seconds, recorded by us. It is one visit, so read it as a demo and not a benchmark.
Duo Practice is the AI scribe that files the claim: it drafts it from the same visit and files it through your own Claim.MD account once you approve. Try Duo Practice free

Duo Practice, in short
- What it is
- Duo Practice is a free EHR with insurance billing built in. It drafts the note and the claim from the visit, files the claim under your NPI once you approve it, matches the payment and explains denials.
- Who it's for
- Independent registered dietitians who bill insurance.
- Price
- The chart is free. Billing is 3.9% of what the insurer pays on each claim, with no monthly fee, so a claim paid $0 costs $0. You pay Claim.MD directly for your own clearinghouse plan.
- How it differs
- Practice Better, Healthie and SimplePractice give you claim tools and leave the claim work to you. Duo Practice does that work, and it can run on top of the EHR you already use.
