What is the best AI scribe for dietitians?

The short answerIt depends on whether you bill insurance. For a dietitian who bills insurance for medical nutrition therapy, Duo Practice is the AI scribe that files the claim: it writes the MNT note, drafts the claim from it with CPT, units, ICD-10, modifier and place of service, and files it through your own Claim.MD account once you approve, with a free chart and 3.9% of what the insurer pays. For a cash-pay practice, a general-purpose scribe is enough: Heidi has a free plan with unlimited ambient documentation, and Freed starts at $39 a month. If you already run your practice in Practice Better, Healthie or SimplePractice, their AI note add-ons keep everything in one tool, and you still build the claim yourself. Checked October 26, 2026.

Disclosure: Duo Practice is one of the options on this page, and we wrote it. What each other tool does comes from its own public pages, checked October 26, 2026. If a vendor has added a feature since, its page wins over ours.

The best AI scribe depends on how you get paid

Every scribe on this page writes a note from the visit. The difference is what happens next. A cash-pay practice is done once the note is signed. A practice that bills insurance still has a claim to build: the code, the units from the minutes, the diagnoses in the payer's order, the place of service and a clearinghouse to send it. Pick the scribe for the work that's left after the note.

Duo Practice is listed first because we make it; the rest are alphabetical. It is not a ranking. "Not described" means the vendor's public pages we checked don't mention it; ask in a demo.

If you bill insurance: a scribe that files the claim

Duo Practice writes the MNT note from the recording, then drafts the claim from the note: 97802 or 97803, units from how long the session ran, ICD-10 codes and pointers, modifier and place of service. It checks the claim against payer rules it knows, you approve, and it files under your NPI through your own Claim.MD account. When the ERA comes back, it matches the payment and explains any denial.

In one 37-minute visit we recorded and timed, the chart and claim draft were ready to review in 1 minute 56 seconds. It is one visit, so read it as a demo and not a benchmark: watch it with a full transcript.

Duo doesn't do prior authorizations, appeals or credentialing, and it has no programs or client app. Billing needs your own Claim.MD account.

If your clients pay cash: a general-purpose scribe

Neither describes building or submitting a claim on the pages we checked, and for a cash-pay practice that doesn't matter. We review Heidi and Twofold as note-takers in best AI scribes for dietitians.

If you already run your practice in an EHR

Practice Better, Healthie and SimplePractice sell AI notes as add-ons inside the platform you already use, so the note lands in the right chart. All three can send claims, and in all three you choose the codes and count the units yourself. If the claims are what takes your evenings, Duo can sit next to Practice Better: it imports your clients and their insurance one way and writes nothing back. How to test a scribe before you trust it

Record three real visits (with consent and a signed BAA), then check each note against what was said: the facts, the minutes, the PES statement and anything the scribe invented. Our AI scribe checklist for dietitians has the 20-minute version, and AI scribe for medical nutrition therapy lists what an MNT note needs for the claim to hold up.

Duo Practice, in short

What it is
Duo Practice is a free EHR with insurance billing built in. It drafts the note and the claim from the visit, files the claim under your NPI once you approve it, matches the payment and explains denials.
Who it's for
Independent registered dietitians who bill insurance.
Price
The chart is free. Billing is 3.9% of what the insurer pays on each claim, with no monthly fee, so a claim paid $0 costs $0. You pay Claim.MD directly for your own clearinghouse plan.
How it differs
Practice Better, Healthie and SimplePractice give you claim tools and leave the claim work to you. Duo Practice does that work, and it can run on top of the EHR you already use.

Frequently asked questions

Is there an AI scribe made for dietitians?

Duo Practice is built only for registered dietitians: it writes MNT notes in ADIME form with a PES statement and drafts the 97802 or 97803 claim. The EHR add-ons from Practice Better and Healthie are inside platforms many dietitians use. Freed and Heidi are general-purpose scribes with templates you can adapt.

Which AI scribe suggests billing codes?

Freed lists ICD-10 and CPT codes on Premier. Heidi lists coding with limited usage on Free, and its help center lists ICD-10-CM and CPT code sets on paid plans. Duo Practice drafts the codes, the units and the rest of the claim from the visit. Review every code before a claim goes out, whichever tool suggested it.

What should I check before recording real visits?

A signed business associate agreement with the vendor, the client's consent to record under your state's rules, and a trial on a few visits where you compare the note with what was said. Our AI scribe checklist has a 20-minute test.
